“Broken Promise” — Clifton Suspension Bridge emerging through the darkness above the Avon Gorge, a scene that captures both the grandeur and the quiet melancholy of Brunel’s masterpiece. One of Bristol’s most recognisable landmarks, rendered here in a mood that lingers long after you look away.
The title carries a double meaning. The bridge itself was Brunel’s great unfinished work — he died in 1859 before seeing it completed, the structure finished as a memorial to him. But look closer: on the bridge there is a bench, a place where countless couples have met, walked, and even proposed. On this occasion, the seat is empty. Has my date turned up? The question — and the mood — is left for the viewer to answer.
