It's always useful to have input into how we approach photography and I enjoy passing on my experience and ideas to others. Whether you are just starting out and are wanting to be more creative, move away from the 'auto' settings, or are more experienced and looking for specific input, I run bespoke courses that will meet your need.

Please let me know your level of fitness before we go as this will have an impact on some of the places we can visit.
Walking boots and a good raincoat are also essential together with a camera with full manual control such as a DSLR or mirrorless camera. A tripod is recommended.

A hands on, ‘learning by doing’ course aimed to provide you with an appreciation of the skills needed to develop your photography
Course location: Around Bristol Harbourside/or Clifton
Time: 2 hours during daytime the course allowing for some night photography to also be practised

Understand and adjust camera settings including aperture, shutter speed and ISO
Learn to control the ‘depth of field’ and shutter speed to create images with blurred backgrounds or images with everything in focus
Learn how to expose and focus your images correctly using the various exposure and focus modes on your camera
Learn simple composition techniques and rules to help improve your photographs
Image dynamic range and coping with extremes of light
Discuss some basic image processing options
Discuss other resources available to help you improve your photography
We will meet at an agreed location and find potential compositions, discussing and practicing the impact of different camera settings, and how these should be applied in different circumstances.
Equipment needed
All DSLR, mirrorless, compact or bridge cameras are suitable providing they allow manual control of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Mobile phone cameras can be used, but don’t generally allow much control over these settings so only parts of the course will be relevant.
Night Photography – 2 hours Book here
A low light and night photography workshop designed for those wishing to venture out at dusk or after dark to capture images of Bristol from a different perspective.
This workshop will help you to develop your understanding of the approaches needed for night photography.
Course location: Around Bristol Harbourside/or Clifton
Time: Starting 1 hr before sunset the course will take place over 2 hours to allow for some night photography to also be practised
