I paused at the top of Mont Arbois in Saint Gervais les Bains and waited patiently in the freezing conditions for the evening light. As the sun set above the Megeve valley, a sea of cloud was lit up by the golden rays of sunshine, mesmerising not just me but a swathe of others watching the scene unfold
